Lost In Place-Failsafe Corroded

The London Ep-Null Device

Nine Inch Nails - With Teeth

Lost-In-Place – Failsafe Corroded

(Ballistic Test Productions – 2004)

A band that is quickly gaining notoriety in the goth/industrial scene, L.I.P. is recommended for fans of older Skinny Puppy and melodic goth metal like Fearful Symmetry.  Originally released on free mp3 download, this CD presents the previous tracks in a more polished form.  L.I.P. mixes heavy electronic beats with a combination of scathing and melodic vocals (some distorted to sound like a female voice!), and pretty-yet-somber keyboard riffs.  The lyrics are introspective, yet relatable, and cover a variety of topics inherent to the human condition.  Check out their mp3s on Ampcast.com if you are curious but don’t want to spend the money uninformed.

The London EP – Null Device

(Nilaihah Records – 2005)

Following in the footsteps of the “Footfalls EP,” Wisconsin-based synth-pop act Null Device releases another limited edition (only 100 pressed) disc that is also available for free LEGAL download!  Null Device is very conscious of their fan base, and that more often than not they cannot afford to shell out hard-earned cash for an EP full of remixes.  Thus, you can go to their webpage and download it for free.  They suggest that if you really like what you hear, make a donation of $3 – but this is strictly voluntary.  They also pressed 100 discs for those die-hard collectors who want physical discs, and these are available from Nilaihah Records at a modest $5 (shipping paid).  So, if you have never heard this band and want a taste, go to their site and download this, as well as the older EP, and see what you think.  This EP shows off that they are probably one of the most well-traveled bands in the synth-pop scene.  There are three versions of the track “Walking in London,” a mournful song about love lost that also lists a variety of fantastic sites to see if you are ever in merry ol’ London (the last mix is an acoustic version sporting a beautiful violin that is to die for).  There are two remixes of previously done songs by synth-superstars IRIS and trip-hop act Hungry Lucy.  These tracks are particularly club-friendly, as if The Smiths decided they wanted to make dance hits – and you can’t beat songs that use phrases like “from villages to hamlets” and don’t sound cheesy.  There are also two other bonus tracks that are worth the modest donation – an early demo of “Electrified” and an unreleased track “Complicated.”  With this EP being a free download, you have no excuse NOT to give it a listen :-D.

Nine Inch Nails – [With Teeth]

(Nothing Records – 2005)

An album about six years in the making, NIN again returns to the scene.  It seems that this album has fans sharply divided; some love it, and some hate it.  Trent Reznor said from the start that this album was going to be quite different from previous works; much more stripped down and raw.   There is still the classic “Reznor angst” that we have all come to expect, but it is not as aggressive as previously expressed.  This album incorporates more live drumming than the standard drum machines (with Dave Ghrol of the Nirvana/Foo Fighters/Killing Joke fame).  The single “The Hand That Feeds” is probably the most aggressive on the album, which is a far cry from the days of “Broken,” but is still quite a catchy tune, and the rest of the album has some really nice piano parts in it.  Aside from these positives, my only major criticism is there are several parts of needless cursing that get a bit annoying – but if you can get past that, than its all smooth sailing.  For hardcore NIN fans, its certainly worth picking up (as long as you have an open mind to musical change) – if you are looking for another “Downward Spiral/Fragile,” you are out of luck.
